E-Learning – What Parents Need to Know

Online learning is a useful tool that is being incorporated in many schools for all grade levels. Shalom teachers have begun to use Google Classroom as a platform to provide information and resources to students as a supplement to classroom learning. Google Classroom can be used to host classroom discussion boards, to provide access to links for websites or videos, to post quizzes, etc. Teachers can use it in the classroom to provide real-time feedback to student learning as they have students respond directly to a prompt or question. This tool can also be beneficial for families who take a vacation during the school year and for the student who is absent due to illness.

In the 2017-2018 school year, we will begin utilizing Google Classroom as E-learning days when there is inclement weather. Teachers will be prepared to deliver lessons via the internet on those days when faculty and students cannot physically be present due to weather.

This year the calendar includes 2 snow days. The first snow day of the school year will be just that. Everyone can take the day to relax and enjoy the moment. Teachers will post assignments to Google classroom by 9:00 a.m. To accommodate those families where the internet may be down due to weather or multiple students who need to use one computer, students will have 2 school days to complete and submit assignments. Teachers will be available through email that day to provide assistance to students as needed. Since this day counts as a school day, teachers will build their lessons on the E-learning day assignment.

We will use the second snow day in the calendar as either a day off for inclement weather later or add to the spring vacation. Utilizing E-learning days allows us to reduce the scenario of needing to take away vacation days in the spring or at the end of the year.
