Faculty Focus – Mrs. Julie Watkins

When it came time to choose a college major, Mrs. Julie Watkins thought she’d follow in the footsteps of everyone in her family and become a teacher. “I always wanted to teach, but my mom wouldn’t allow me to go into education because that was the only profession I knew. Everyone in my family was a teacher.” Mrs. Watkins graduated with a degree in business and economics but felt called to fulfil her dream and later went back to school to get her K-8 teaching certificate.

Mrs. Watkins joined Shalom Christian Academy as a 4th grade teacher in 2015. She says the best part of teaching at Shalom is building relationships. She is proud to work here because “Shalom is such a caring place to be. Everyone truly cares about everyone else.”

When you walk into Mrs. Watkins classroom, you’ll immediately notice how organized it is – something she learned during time spent running and owning her own gourmet cookie business. She also worked as a business executive in marketing for Giant Food Stores and a teacher in the public school system. She channels skills learned from her previous jobs into her current teaching methods. “A typical day for me includes making sure that my students are involved and motivated,” she said. “This includes songs, cheers, and any other crazy thing that I think of that will help students learn a concept. My students, and my desire to impact their lives, keep me motivated.”

Mrs. Watkins has been married to her husband Dan for 24 years – they were set up by her mom! They have two children (Damon and Janae) and one canine kiddo named Slugger. They love all things Pennsylvania sports – Penguins, Pirates, Steelers, and Penn State. The family attends Prince Street UB in Shippensburg.
