Faculty Focus – Chris Lehman

During his freshman year in college, Chris Lehman took an introduction to education class. “I wasn’t the sort of person who knew I wanted to be a teacher since kindergarten,” he said. “God started to nudge me in that direction until I finally got the message.”

The Shalom alumnus (class of 2004) graduated from Eastern Mennonite University with a bachelor’s degree in English and secondary education and a minor in Bible and religion. He began working at Shalom Christian Academy in 2014 and spends his days teaching 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Science and 6th grade Bible. This year, Mr. Lehman will add high school English/British Literature to the list. He also coaches the boys varsity soccer team.Chris Lehman Quote (1)

Mr. Lehman gets going as early as 6:00 am most days and during soccer season the days can be long. “Many things keep me motivated, most importantly my relationship with Christ. One of the verses that I try to embody in teaching and in every aspect of my life is Col. 3:23, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.” Also, I am motivated by my students, especially when an idea or topic “clicks” in their mind, and they’re able to understand it in a new way. And of course, I am encouraged and supported by my wonderful wife Bethany and our four month-old son Caleb,” he said.

Mr. Lehman says he’s proud to work for Shalom. “I am blessed to work at Shalom because of the great support from our administrators, colleagues, parents, and students – I realize this quite often, especially when I hear others complaining about their place of work. I can honestly say that I enjoy getting up and going to work each morning.”

Mr. Lehman met his wife Bethany when he taught high school English at a Christian international school in Nairobi, Kenya. They now live in Chambersburg with their son, Caleb, and will celebrate their 5 year anniversary in July. When he’s not spending time with his family, he enjoys biking, trying new foods, hiking, camping, reading and watching sports. The Lehman’s attend King Street Church.
