Elementary Student Life

  • Each student in first through fifth grade memorizes a poem, fable or verses and presents it to his or her class. Several students from each classroom are then selected to present to a larger audience of peers, family, and friends at our annual Speech Meet, held during the Shalom Showcase.
  • For the third, fourth or fifth grade student who enjoys math, there is opportunity to compete in the ACSI Math Olympics.
  • Fifth graders may be selected to attend a regional Spelling Bee sponsored by ACSI.
  • Students in kindergarten through grade two have chorus each week. They prepare for programs held at Christmas and in the spring. In addition to choral pieces, there are opportunities for students to sing solos or in small group ensembles. The program also includes speaking parts. At the spring program, preschoolers from area Growing Tree classes and Shalom’s Pre-K program who are going to kindergarten in the fall join them.
  • Third through fifth grade students also present a Christmas and spring program often in the form of a musical.
  • Grandparents of elementary students are honored on a day in October. They are invited to spend a morning at school participating in a Grandparents’ Day program, visiting classes, and ending with lunch with their grandchild.
  • Pastors’ Day is a special time when these important people spend a morning at the school interacting with students in classrooms and in a program.
  • Third grade students learn to play the recorder during a unit in music class. Students continue playing in fourth and fifth grade.
  • Fifth grade students have the opportunity to learn a band instrument with group lessons provided by a Shalom music teacher. The group plays for the annual Christmas and spring programs.
  • Elementary students celebrate Thanksgiving in a day of special activities around the holiday.
  • Elementary Field Day is an event with competitions and activities in late spring. The culminating event is the faculty vs. fifth grade kickball game. The junior class organizes the activities under the direction of the athletic director.
